In 2016, the Serbian government announced that it was initiating a programme of restitution for Jewish victims of the Holocaust in wartime Serbia. The “heirless property restitution law,” the first of its kind in Eastern Europe, proposed that thousands of buildings confiscated from Jews during the occupation would be handed to the country’s Association of Jewish Communities. The government also undertook to offer financial support to the community in the form of an annual sum of 950,000 Euros for the next twenty-five years. Dear colleagues, we are happy to announce that we are inviting applications for two PhD-Positions in the SNSF-Project "Europe's Un/Deserving: Moralizations of Inequality in Comparative Perspective" (1.1.2021-31.12.2024) at the School for Humanities and Social Sciences, University of St. Gallen, Switzerland. The 4-year project is headed by Prof. Dr. Jelena Tosic and co-coordinated by Dr. Andreas Streinzer and is based on a cooperation with Prof. Dr. Violetta Zentai (Center for Policy Studies, CEU, Budapest).

The protection of minority rights is central to the realisation of the three pillars of the United Nations: Human Rights, Peace and Security, and Development. Across the globe, there are long-standing situations of minority rights violations, and more recent crisis and challenges that result from these injustices. The UN has created two principal mechanisms with a specific mandate to review these situations: the Special Rapporteur on minority issues and the UN Forum on Minority Issues. This webinar series aims to support the work of both of these mechanisms by debating recent and future thematic priorities and discussing relevant country case studies.
