Online Discussion - A year in SEE: views with a twist

(Pressetext)

09.12.2020 16:00 - 17:30 Uhr, online via Zoom

The year 2020 has been a year of pandemic and elections, which has dominated the news outlets, not only in regards to the recent elections in the US, but also in the region. North Macedonia and Serbia had parliamentary elections, Bosnia and Herzegovina had local elections and Kosovo had a change in government. North Macedonia changed its name, Serbia and Kosovo signed a US brokered agreement. All countries were and continue to be heavily affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has put a large strain on medical and social systems which were already fragile. Within this context, it seems that high politics is the only politics in the region. However, for S’bunker, Buka, Kosovo 2.0, Meduza and Mašina as some of the leading alternative media outlets in the region, other issues have been highlighted which show a sound opposition to often-times unsound policies. These magazines highlight gender issues, social inclusion, marginalization and stimulate activism and different ways of thinking about politics. During this panel the speakers will aim to look at the events of the year 2020 which did not make it on the mainstream news but have affected the citizens of the region and these magazines have covered in depth. The panel will shed light on issues overlooked and marginalized, showcasing diverse views on the past year, whether it be highlighting the treatment of women in hospitals, being old during a pandemic, or the creation of alternative spaces and politics from below.
