An Epoch Threshold? The Year 1821 in the History of South-East Europe, at Bicentennial

September 23, 2021 to September 25, 2021

An episode with special relevance in the emergence of the national states in the Balkans and in the transition to modernity in this space, subjected to intense and fertile historiographical controversies starting from the immediately following years, 1821 has not exhausted its explanatory historical potential. Associated with the concept of revolution even from that time or, more recently, with a secessionist movement of Christians in the Balkans from the Ottoman Empire, the events triggered by the revolt led by Tudor Vladimirescu in Wallachia and the Hetairist movement in Moldavia were defined as an epoch threshold, according to the inspired words of the Romanian historian Paul Cornea. Conceptualized by the German philosopher Hans Blumberg as a significant landmark of an almost imperceptible transition between two historical epochs, the notion of epoch threshold can provide the necessary openness to a substantial debate, detached from historiographical canons and stereotypes.
